Re painting German helmets
Просмотров 16 тыс.4 года назад
I had these repro M42 Helmets and wasn't happy with the colour and finish. After much research I discovered most German helmets left the factory with a standard 'Grau' or grey finish and it was up to the owner of the helmet to repaint if they wished. Many helmets were repainted when the owner came across a tank crew or vehicle crew repainting their tank/truck, quite literally 'Hey pal, how abou...

A selection of pictures from my trip to Normandy last year 2019. We only covered the American sector (I plan to visit the British and Canadian sector as soon as) but we were there for a week and got to see an awful lot in a short space of time. It was really humbling to 'walk in the footsteps' of those brave men and women and despite having studying the history of World War Two for nearly forty...

This is my first film and despite it's many shortcomings I'm very proud of all the cast and crew who put many hours of work into making it happen. To all the re-enactors out there, yes I'm aware the American's boots were wrong, (ordered Corcorans ...

    I know this is an old video. Its not a bad starting point. I would suggest updating the video description to reflect some of the lessons learned from the comments below. I know you couldn’t get a hold of aluminum oxide. You should explain that in the video description. People will use your methods as a starting point so you should tell them what you learned so will be informed as well. Also, your helmets look much better than what you initially had them as. The color tones are subjective to the company producing the paint. Dunkel grau (RAL code 7015)Schiefer grau vs feldgrau (RAL code 6006) are similar in color just vary in color tone. Feldgrau is not apple green. Apple green was a pre war color. Helmets were later made to be darker so the next color shade used on m40s was nicknamed pea green. Feld grau is not pea green as mentioned by some one else. Pea green as a color is a tone between Feldgrau and apple green. Again the color tones are good. Both are very appropriate for m42 helmets. Just update the video description to reflect correct info. learned from the comments and this is a decent starting point for beginners. Also the lack of aluminum oxide is tough. Its hard to sprinkle it on and not look clumpy like cork sprinkled on an m1 steel pot. Someone suggested mixing it in with acrylic paint and brushing it on. If dome right. That finish will look great. Lay down a good base coat of a flat spray paint, so brush applied paint and aluminum oxide mix has something to really bite into. Sanding the paint on the metal isn’t enough for that kind of paint and application. It really needs nice flat paint to act like primer. Stipple the paint on. Id you stipple, it will look sprayed on. Bake the finish at 180*f for a few hours. This will speed up the curing process and harden the finish too. Then spray paint over it with the Desiree color Or. You can use a textured finish from a can like rustoleum or krylon. Hammered metal finish looks good texture wise. Spray over with the correct color. Easy way to simulate aluminum oxide. Yes this isn’t how helmets were done historically. However, you’re trying to replicate the end results to simulate aluminum oxide texture. For those only saying sprinkle on aluminum oxide, the Germans mixed it into the paint and sprayed it on. So for all of the accuracy purists out there( most likely having a fit) these are repro helmets, the intent is to simulate the texture and take away the shine. Theses are some good ways to do that. Ways that anyone who does not have the money pr means to do it correctly. Regardless, the end results look nice! Much better than when you started out!

    • @zangtumtung
      @zangtumtung 2 года назад

      Many thanks for your comment. As you quite correctly pointed out I am in no way an expert and simply wished to repaint them so they weren't so shiny. They were/are for use in filming and I am not a re-enactor so exact detail is not really needed and they certainly wouldn't pass muster for a re-enactment group. However I am pleased with the way they turned out and yes, they do look better 😃

I was born in the late 50s I didn't even here the word until the mid 60s and it still wasn't that common then, by the late 60s the word was all over the place.

    To apply a grainy finish try spraying the helmet with a tack spray by 3-M and then a light dusting of sawdust etc. The paint should seal things up and if not use any sort of dull coat etc. To age the liner - and it will look like perspiration stains - apply damp coffee grounds.

    Im using aluminum oxide for texture as sand is a little large. It doesn't really matter because they were frequently overpainted in the field. When using aluminum oxide and enamel paint, I'll bake it in the oven on a very low setting for an hour or so, 150° . It actually melds the aluminum oxide and enamel paint into a super strong paint . I did it with restoring coleman lanterns and just transferred the process to helmets( no A.O) on lanterns though . Corked M1s I lower the temp and time so as not to burn it.( not sure if that has or ever could happen ,it's just something that I THINK might happen if temp was too high or in too long. Good video, tips are always good for those of us unwilling or incapable of shelling out the ridiculous amounts of loot that Nazi junk costs. I have (1) M35. I collect allied only, M1s and M1917s. (Except that 1 M35 which I'm not thrilled about but im going all in with field camouflage, some European chicken wire ( its different than ours in the U.S.) or maybe a "so called" Normandy camo, job. Sorry about jacking up your thread. Decent job. Good color. Thanks for the video
